Pelargonium

Even lightly brushing the soft grey-green leaves releases a spicy perfume. The plant is so vigorous that if you take cuttings in summer you will have plants to bring into the house during the winter.

Sprawling glaucous-green foliage makes the plant look like it should be a succulent. Pale pink flowers. Looks good where it can trail over the edge of pots or trained up supports.

The same succulent foliage and pink flowers of P. acetosum but with white and green variegated leaves.

This is the plant that got us started on collecting species pelargoniums. It forms a mounf of ting leaves that is smothered with sprays of magenta flowers. It’s the most floriferous plant we know and only stops flowering when we cut it hard back in November.

Stiff, dark green foliage that resembles a conifer; pale mauve flowers

Although with the same parentage as P. Ardens, this has very feathery foliage and deep, velvety-red flowers.

Succulent-like sprawling stems with fat nodes and mustard-coloured flowers. The scent is very sharp and tangy - some like it; others think it smells of Izal.

This was the first of the genus to be introduced to Britain. I don't know who had the idea to name this plant as sad, because while the cream-coloured flowers are small, they are absolutely charming. As the heat of the day recedes the flowers become deliciously scented.

Sprawling stems of small grey leaves and tiny white flowers. Ours were accidently left outside one winter and although they were in a sorry state the following spring they soon recovered. It may be that they are hardier than imagined.

The name itself has such musical qualities that you would want to grow this just for the pleasure of saying its name out loud. The foliage is soft, apple-green . The flowers seem to change with the light: a biscuit-coloured base overlaid with iridescent turquoise. A really exceptional plant
